Sync Philips Hue lights to music

Philips Hue is the brand most people think of first. Here's how Hue lights can follow your music, with or without a TV.

New to this? Start with our step-by-step guide: how to sync smart lights with music.

How Hue lights connect

Philips Hue bulbs don’t join Matter on their own. They talk to the Hue Bridge, and the Bridge shares them with Matter apps and controllers like Apple Home, Google Home and FirePod. If you already have a Bridge, your Hue lights are ready.

It’s also worth checking what you actually own. Signify makes both Hue and WiZ, and some of the bulbs in our test room that we’d been calling Hue turned out to be WiZ. WiZ bulbs connect over Wi-Fi without a Bridge, so they set up differently.

Hue Sync Box or FirePod

The Hue Sync Box sits between your TV and its sources over HDMI and matches your Hue lights to what’s on screen. It’s great for movies and games, but it only follows what comes through the TV, and it only runs Hue lights.

FirePod is for music. You play from any app on your phone, tablet or computer over Bluetooth, the same way you’d use any speaker, and your lights follow the song. That includes your Hue lights and the lights from other brands in the same room.

Adding Hue lights with Matter

  1. Set up your Hue lights in the Hue app with a Hue Bridge, if you haven’t already.
  2. In the Hue app’s settings, find Matter and choose to connect the Bridge to another app. It gives you a setup code.
  3. Use that code to add the Bridge in your Matter app or controller.

Hue with FirePod

Your Hue lights stay in the Hue app, with all your scenes and routines. FirePod adds the music, moving your Hue lights in time with the song along with any WiZ, LIFX or Govee lights you have.

Questions

Do Philips Hue lights work with FirePod?

Yes. Hue lights work with FirePod through the Hue Bridge, which shares them over Matter.

Do I need a Hue Bridge?

Yes. Hue bulbs talk to the Hue Bridge, and the Bridge is what connects them to Matter apps and controllers.

Is FirePod a replacement for the Hue Sync Box?

They do different jobs. The Sync Box follows what's playing on your TV through HDMI. FirePod follows the music you play from your phone or any Bluetooth device.
