Smart lights guide
Sync Nanoleaf lights to your music
Our Nanoleaf bulbs were the hardest to get dancing. Now they have the biggest bounce in the room.
How Nanoleaf looks with music
We have four Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs in our test room. At first they barely moved with a song, and they took more work on our side than any other brand. Now they’re one of the most fun lights we have: they sit low between beats, jump to full brightness on each hit, then fade back down, so every beat reads as a bounce rather than a flicker.
Nanoleaf’s own music features
Nanoleaf’s panels and Lines have Rhythm scenes, which react to the beat, volume and pitch of whatever they hear. The microphone is in the light itself, not your phone, so it works with any music in the room, along with anyone talking over it.
On a computer, the Nanoleaf Desktop App’s Orchestrator follows the music your computer plays, from Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube. It needs a Nanoleaf Premium subscription, and it only hears sound that plays on that computer.
Nanoleaf Rhythm not reacting?
- Pick a Rhythm scene. Only Rhythm scenes react to sound. They’re the ones with a music note icon in the Nanoleaf app.
- Check the Rhythm light. On a Rhythm module, solid blue means it’s listening, flashing blue means it’s starting up and green means it’s updating. Wait for solid blue.
- Turn it up or move it closer. The phone app has no microphone sensitivity setting, so a quiet song across the room may not register. Play it louder or nearer the panels.
- Restart the controller. If the lights have dropped off Wi-Fi, unplug them and plug them back in. Nanoleaf lights need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Nanoleaf explains the Rhythm indicator lights on its support site.
If one bulb lags behind
If one bulb in a set behaves differently from the rest, missing changes or lagging behind, reset it. We tried everything else first. A factory reset and a fresh pairing was the only fix for ours, and it’s been fine since.
FirePod vs. Nanoleaf's music sync
| Feature | FirePod | Nanoleaf Rhythm scenes | Nanoleaf Orchestrator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works with other brands' lights | Nanoleaf only | Nanoleaf only | |

FirePod isn't out yet. Everything else comes from the makers' own pages, checked October 2026: Nanoleaf: Scenes FAQ (Rhythm scenes), Nanoleaf: Rhythm microphone and indicator lights, Nanoleaf: Orchestrator.
Questions
Does Nanoleaf sync with Spotify?
Not from the phone app. Rhythm scenes listen to the room through a microphone in the light. Nanoleaf's Desktop App has Orchestrator, which follows what your computer plays, Spotify included, but it needs a Nanoleaf Premium subscription.
Why isn't my Nanoleaf Rhythm scene reacting?
Check that a Rhythm scene is playing (it has a music note icon), that the light's Rhythm indicator shows it's listening, and that the music is loud enough near the light. The checklist is on this page.
Do Nanoleaf Shapes and Canvas need the Rhythm module?
No. Shapes, Canvas, Lines and Elements have the microphone built in. Only the original Light Panels need the separate Rhythm module.
Can I change how sensitive the Nanoleaf microphone is?
Not in the phone app. Orchestrator in the Desktop App has a sensitivity slider.
Which Nanoleaf lights work with Matter?
Nanoleaf lists its Essentials Matter bulb, Matter lightstrip, downlight, floor lamp and holiday string lights. Older Essentials bulbs from before 2023 work with Apple Home but not Matter.
