Sync TP-Link lights to your music

TP-Link bulbs bump right on the beat, as long as each one is set up the same way.

How FirePod compares Step-by-step setup

We have four TP-Link bulbs in our test room. Three bump together on the beat: they rest low between hits and jump to full brightness on each one. Like Sengled, they change best in one clean step rather than a slow fade, so FirePod gives them fewer, bigger moves.

Tapo music sync not working?

TP-Link’s music feature is called Sync-to-Sound, in the Tapo app. It listens through your phone’s microphone and works on Tapo light strips like the L900, L920 and L930. Kasa’s KL400, KL420 and KL430 strips don’t have it. If yours sits still, TP-Link suggests these:

  1. Keep the app open. Your phone stops apps from listening in the background, so the Tapo app has to stay on screen.
  2. Allow the microphone. Check the Tapo app has microphone access in your phone’s settings, and that nothing else is using the mic.
  3. Move closer. Bring the phone near the music and the light. Strong, punchy songs work better than quiet ones.
  4. Turn off mobile data and VPNs. Your phone should talk to the light over your home Wi-Fi.
  5. Check the router. The light needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and a guest network or “AP isolation” setting can stop the phone reaching it.

The full list is on TP-Link’s Sync-to-Sound help page.

The bulb that wouldn’t bump

The fourth took every colour and every change, but ramped each one slowly while the other three snapped. Everything we could see about it matched the others, model and firmware included.

Our best guess is a fade setting saved on the bulb by TP-Link’s own app, which other apps can’t see or change. If one of yours drifts while the rest snap, look for a fade or transition setting in the Tapo or Kasa app, or factory reset it.

Questions

Why isn't my Tapo music sync working?

Keep the Tapo app open in front, check it has microphone access, and move your phone closer to both the music and the light. TP-Link also suggests turning off mobile data and any VPN. The checklist is on this page.

Does Kasa have music sync?

Not on the Kasa KL400, KL420 and KL430 light strips, according to TP-Link's own comparison. Music sync is on Tapo strips like the L900, L920 and L930.

Can I sync a group of Tapo lights to music?

Not yet. Tapo's Sync-to-Sound works one light at a time and doesn't support groups.

Why does my Tapo strip keep changing with no music on?

That's normal. With no sound to follow, Sync-to-Sound runs a regular color loop.
